Resources and training

 Research and training mornings

Training meetings are normally held on the alternate Tuesday mornings. They are to cover family history and/or basic computer skills and any other aspects of the fun in researching family history. The courses are held in the Town Hall, in the rear room.

Training meetings are less formal than the main meetings, usually people sit with their own or one of the group’s computers and either carry on with their own research or join in with others on group research. If any of the members need advice or help, Muriel our research expert or one of the team are always on hand. Sometimes Muriel will do a presentation of her own, she may show us techniques for closing difficult gaps in an ancestry tree, or demonstrate where to find hidden information on the web. In recent times we undertook a project looking at well known Selby folk from the past.

In addition to the training sessions, we have a variety of resources which are available to members. Here is a list which is almost up to date. At the moment (Feb. 2021) we cannot access the resources or Library cupboard!

RESOURCES

The Group has extensive resources available for members at their Tuesday morning meetings, an abbreviated list is given below.

LAPTOPS
We have 6 laptops, all will normally have Wi-fi Internet access.
They can be used independently, with assistance or on your behalf.

VISUALISERS
We now have two visualisers which can be used to show photographs or documents to the whole group using a laptop and projector. Very useful for non-electronic resources. One of them also acts as a scanner.

MICROFICHE
We have 2 Microfiche Readers, one of which is portable and available on loan to members. There are also many microfiche with local Parish Registers.

LIBRARY
We have a compact library holding a variety of books, to aid you with your Family History research in Yorkshire and beyond. All of these are available on loan to members. To see the full contents of the Library (not just books), click on the picture of the books.

MEMBERS
The most important asset of the Group is our members. Many are experienced family history researchers who are very willing to give support and advice to those members that are new to Family History research, or for those that wish to break down their personal "brick wall"
